About Us

Our Mission: Creating a More Connected Rhode Island

At Paths to Progress RI, we are dedicated to expanding and enhancing Rhode Island’s biking and pedestrian infrastructure. We believe that a well-connected network of recreational and transportation paths is essential for a thriving economy, a healthier population, and a more sustainable future.

The recent surge in biking and outdoor activities, especially during the coronavirus pandemic, has reaffirmed the need for safe and accessible pathways across the state. To better understand the needs of our communities, we conducted a statewide survey capturing new biking activity and transportation habits. The overwhelming response from riders—both new and experienced—is helping us advocate for meaningful improvements to Rhode Island’s path network.

Why Paths Matter

Boosting the Economy
Rhode Island’s path system is emerging as a valuable tourism asset. Investing in multimodal transportation options ensures that increased tourism does not contribute to traffic congestion. Additionally, businesses looking to establish themselves in Rhode Island consider bike-friendly infrastructure a key factor in attracting top talent. Studies show that path construction creates more jobs per dollar spent than road construction, adding momentum to Rhode Island’s economic growth.

Strong Public Support
For decades, Rhode Islanders have overwhelmingly supported recreational bonds, with approval rates between 65-71% since 1985. In a recent survey:

  • 80.3% agreed that improving public transportation benefits everyone.
  • 81.6% believe modern infrastructure is crucial to economic prosperity.
  • 76.1% said making roads safer is a top priority.
  • 67.4% believe in building a 21st-century transit system to attract businesses and jobs.

These numbers highlight the strong community backing for investing in our recreational and transportation paths.

Our Vision: Connecting Rhode Island’s Paths

With 65 miles of paths already built, our goal is to close the gaps and expand this network to maximize its economic, recreational, and transportation benefits. A fully connected path system will:

  • Elevate Rhode Island’s tourism industry – Every dollar spent on paths generates nine tourism dollars in return.
  • Improve quality of life – Companies value walkable and bikeable communities that attract young professionals.
  • Enhance public health – Active transportation reduces heart disease, diabetes, and cancer while lowering healthcare costs.
  • Reduce traffic congestion – Investing in alternative transportation options means less time in traffic and greater productivity.
  • Protect the environment – Biking and walking have significantly lower carbon footprints compared to driving.
